It is well known that the maintenance of good health is largely based on the adoption of healthy lifestyle habits. Having a balanced diet, exercising regularly, refraining from smoking, avoiding stress and sleeping well are top of the list of ways to keep fit. As for physical activity, its health benefits are well established. But to feel them or to observe them, it is different ways to put on muscle and crucial to exercise regularly (at least three times a week, ideally every day) over a long period of time.
Who has not subscribed to a sports center before losing his enthusiasm? This happens to many people. In fact, it is estimated that more than half of those who begin an exercise program like customized gym workouts drop out of it in the next six months. Here are some tips for you not to be part of this statistic.
- Set realistic goals
Knowing exactly where to go usually helps to get there. Setting specific goals will motivate you to take the means to achieve them. It can be beneficial to display them in strategic places: on the refrigerator door or your bedside table or on the screen of your smartphone for example. Ideally, opt for goals whose outcome is measurable, such as a number of pounds to lose within a certain time or performing a squat on daily basis. It may be good to set a final goal and intermediate goals that will give you an additional boost of motivation.
- Like what you do
Find an activity that you like to practice first. There is no point in trying to swim if you hate water or sign up for a gym if being confined inside is a nuisance. Do you like to dance? Sign up for an aerobics or Zumba class. For older people, a social dance class can be a great way to maintain flexibility and coordination.
- Discuss your approach with those around you
Because unity is strength, it will be advantageous for you to be able to count on the encouragement and the support of your entourage. Discuss your approach with family, friends and colleagues and inform them of your goals. In addition, determine what type of athlete you are. Do you prefer to indulge in your sports activities alone or in a group? Who knows, maybe some of your loved ones will want to accompany you to your sessions.
